At Greenville OB/GYN, we’re always looking for ways to better provide for the growing needs of our ever-expanding community. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that our own Dr. Hale Stephenson was recently board certified in Urogynecology. For those of you who don’t know, and that’s okay if you don’t, Urogynecology is a sub-specialty of gynecology for the treatment of pelvic floor disorders, such as stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.
In recent years, the number of women who are experiencing some sort of pelvic floor dysfunction has increased dramatically, and so has the demand for physicians specializing in the treatment of those disorders. In 1996, there was only one board-accredited program for the advanced training in Urogynecology. By June 2010, that number had grown to 37.
Pelvic floor dysfunction occurs when the pelvic floor is weakened, over-stressed or stretched due to damage caused by pregnancy, obesity, surgery, disease or high-impact activities. Symptoms of pelvic floor disorders include urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic or vaginal pain, or difficulty going to the bathroom.
There are a variety of treatment options available, and the recommendation for these treatments fluctuate depending on the severity of the issues. Treatment options include the following:
If these problems persist after non-surgical treatments have been exhausted, surgery may be recommended.
Dr. Stephenson’s board certification in this subspecialty signifies a great advancement in the quality of care available to the women of eastern North Carolina. We’re proud to have Dr. Stephenson as a part of our team, and we look forward to helping countless women return to the quality of life they love.
